Spades rules & skill ratings
Four players, every player for themselves. Each hand deals 13 cards; bid how many tricks you will take. Clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades each run from 2 to ace. Spades are always trump.
Follow the led suit if you can. You cannot lead spades until one has been played off-suit, unless your hand contains only spades. The highest trump wins, otherwise the highest card in the led suit wins.
Make your bid for 10 points per bid trick, plus 1 per extra trick (a bag). Miss it and lose 10 points per bid trick. Nil (0) earns 100 with no tricks, or loses 100 otherwise. Every 10 bags costs 100 points; tricks taken on a failed nil also count as bags.
The highest score wins after a hand reaches 200 points, or after 10 hands. Equal scores tie. Each turn allows 90 seconds; running out of time or resigning places you last, with the others tied above you. Reloading keeps your seat but does not stop the timer.
Ratings start at 1200. Each completed match adds an Elo-style adjustment based on your placement and opponents’ ratings at the start (K=32, averaged across three opponents). Ratings are provisional for your first 10 matches. No money or wagering.
Waiting tables expire after 30 minutes. Sign in to play; public rankings use a stable player handle rather than your email.
